Postoperative Care
At the conclusion of surgery patients are taken from the operating room and brought to an area to begin their postoperative recovery. Patients are usually brought to the Postoperative Anesthesia Care Unit, or PACU. However, some patients may need more intensive monitoring and/or intervention requiring recovery in the Intensive Care Unit, ICU. Still other patients may require less intensive monitoring and/or internvention than the PACU. These patients are able to bypass the PACU and be taken directly back to One Day Services, ODS. The exact area of recovery will depend on several factors including but not limited to:
- The location of the procedure performed
- The type of anesthesia administered
- The preoperative location of the patient
- Intraoperative events
- The postoperative condition of the patient
- Patient medical comorbidities
- Surgeon preference
Regardless of the location of recovery, patients can rest easy knowing they will be looked after by a skilled nurse able to meet their immediate postoperative needs.
